124 was spiteful. A house haunted by the ghost of Sethe’s dead baby, 124 was filled to the roof with memories; hideous memories of their days in slavery. Sethe, who has been free from slavery for eighteen years now, is still bound by her awful memories of it. Her daughter, Denver, was too bound by the past, but Denver’s past never included slavery. Instead, Denver is enslaved by her fear of the world outside of 124 and the loneliness she encounters while at 124. With the help of her mother’s past and their present, Denver eventually looks past 124 and out towards the world, allowing herself to create her own identity. Denver has grown up alone. Throughout the novel, all of the characters have difficulty defining themselves. This destruction of self is due to the physical, emotional, and spiritual wreckage created by slavery. Although never experiencing slavery first hard, Denver has a difficult time defining herself. She constantly defines herself by her relationships. Denver holds Sethe’s past up on a pedestal, having the idea that Sethe’s memories are more valuable than the present; regardless of the fact that Sethe’s past is full of tragedy. The memories that Sethe recounts while with Paul D, Schoolteacher and Sweet Home, are absent of Denver’s presence and prove to be competing with Denver for Sethe’s attention. Because both Sethe and Denver dwell on Sethe’s past so much, Denver feels that she adds no value to Sethe’s memories and â€Å"hates the stories her mother told that did not concern herself.† Denver even wishes she were a part of Sethe’s past that included slavery, regardless of its brutality. Centuries ago as people aged and needed assistance with care including hygiene, meals, toileting and moving around, were given assistance from members of their family within the home. Most of these cares were provided by elderly patient daughters to care for them so they can continue to live home. The number of females in the workforce has increased over the years however the increase of females in the workforce is affecting the age females are having children therefore parents are entering their elderly years when their daughters are in their prime of their work years making it difficult to be available to provide care. Life expectancy has increased which means there are more people living longer and entering the age when they may need care. People who need assistance with care tend to find it hard to seek help, as they believe this is a sure sign they are getting old as they can no longer effectively care for themselves and sometimes takes a toll on the self esteem. She responded, with the same look persisting on her face,† Most people cannot pay this ticket, and usually sit it out. How are you able to afford this? † I did not reply, just simply took my receipt and went on with my day. I few days later, I received another notice saying I had not paid the ticket and a warrant would be issued in the next week if it was not paid. I went back to the courthouse, receipt in hand, and got everything cleared up quickly. They needed more information. They wanted to verify my job and source of income and sorts, just digging into my personal life, wanting to know how I could afford to pay such a ticket for my son. This situation I felt was racially skewed and something I feel would have never happened had I been a white man, never the less had my son been a white young boy. Life throws curve-balls and I understand that I cannot catch them all. I wish there was a way to discern whether they are truly just situational or racial. But regardless of if I could really tell or not, they would still happen and I would still have to deal with them simply. America is so focused on differences, no one is seen as possibly being equal in any measurement and that keeps the country stuck in a mindset. This mindset being: Life not fair. Deal with it.
